Exciting but pretty deadly

THE TALE OF PRETTY DEADLY IS A NEW PLAY WRITTEN BY POET Ian McMillan. Presented by Chol Theatre at Batley Town Hall, it discusses the value of communication in a world dominated by technology, in the most light-hearted, entertaining way imaginable. Musical, lively, funny and visually stimulating, it’s a fairy tale for Britain in the 21st Century.

And everybody is eager to put on an excellent show. The busy cast, crew and organisers are readying themselves to give an unforgettable performance. It’s Shanaz Gulzar’s debut as director and she thinks it is going very well; “It’s a great piece of new writing, with no hitches so far!”
Following in the theme of communication, the performance uses multi-media throughtout, including videos of local school children to introduce the piece. “We wanted to use alternative forms of media, its what the play is all about and people will pick up different ideas from different mediums.”

The play also tackles the controversial issue of young people’s headgear. Pretty Deadly is a skater in a headscarf, on a mission to talk, chat, text and explain. She’s not your average teenage heroine but this is not your average teenage fairytale. “It has magic and is very playful. It’s about making friends and not hiding technology.”

As a theatrical group, Chol Theatre, who are based at LBT Huddersfield, work in partnership with schools, colleges and the community as a whole to explore issues of cultural identity. Pretty Deadly has a diverse cast of four performers that will sing and dance their way through the hour long performance accompanied by live music.

Hoody or headscarf, young or old, Chol are aiming for a contemporary fairytale for all.
