Are our Children eating Halal food at
School?

The Batley based Indian Muslim Welfare Society is to hold a unique seminar that will look at whether Muslim Children across Kirklees are being provided with authentic halal food at school.
Islamic Scholars from across Kirklees along with representatives from IMWS are concerned about the authenticity of Halal food that is served in schools across Kirklees; hence representatives from Kirklees Council will also be in attendance to engage in dialogue about the authenticity of the Halal food provided.
When contacted by AWAAZ a Kirklees Catering officer said “In certain schools Halal food is provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays and in some daily. Hyrstmount and Purlwell School in Batley are also provided with Halal food that consists of Kheema, Peas, Pakoras, and Samosas. Westborough High School in Dewsbury was the only high school that had served Halal food.”
When asked about the authenticity of the food provided the officer said “A local Imam along with a group of scholars have visited the Halal food supplier in North Shields to verify the authenticity. We also have a certificate verifying the authenticity of the Halal food. A Halal review group headed by Janet Rayner was set up a while ago, although there are different views with regards to pre stunning.”
Kirklees council provides healthy options and keeps to Government Guidelines on Nutrition in Schools. Vegetarian meals along with a special theme day, that includes Italian day where Pasta Carbonara with garlic bread, specific pizzas and vegetable ravioli is popular amongst children from minority backgrounds.

IMWS Islamic Affairs Advisor, Mufti Yusuf Akudi told AWAAZ “We will be hosting an event where we will be having a consultation to provide halal meat for Muslim school children in Schools across Kirklees and we will then take it from there, at the moment it is just a consultation.”
